Overview
The Department of Periodontology and Implantology is located on the ground floor of the second block of Vishnu Dental College. It stands over an area of 3734 sqft with separate undergraduate and postgraduate sections. It has all the equipment and instruments as per the norms laid out by the Dental Council of India. The department trains the undergraduates for the BDS program in 3rd and 4th year and a complete 3-year program leading to the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS). The postgraduate intake is 5 per year at present.
The department has well-qualified and experienced teaching faculty on a permanent full-time teaching basis. Two professors, four readers (Associate Professors) and five senior lecturers (Assistant Professors) are available to train the students in all aspects of Periodontics and Implantology. All types of periodontal treatment are provided to the patients at a minimal cost. The academic program includes lectures, tutorials, seminars, journal clubs, and pedagogy sessions. Research is given prime importance with all the Postgraduate students and teaching faculty engaged in various projects. Patient empowerment is fiercely observed and practised in the department.
The Department of Periodontics conducts various Continuous Dental Education (CDE) Programmes for both faculty, practitioners, graduates and post-graduates. “Perio Akshaya”, “Perio Avalokan”, “Perio Inspiron”, “Perio Adhyaan”, and “Perio Anveshan” are the first-ever unique initiatives that target not only the student community but also the Perio fraternity at large.
“Perio Akshaya” which is held thrice a year is a platform for continuous education in periodontics involving all three generations of periodontists across the country aiming at discussing the past, present and future of periodontology. “Perio Adhyaan” and “Perio Avalokan” are the revision programs for the first and final-year postgraduates in periodontics targeting the topics in basic sciences and in periodontics from an exam point of view thereby benefiting the exam-going students at large. “Perio Anveshan” is another unique initiative of the Team perio@ VDC that conducts online quizzes in the subject of periodontology for the entire final year exam appearing students of Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) across the country. “Perio Inspiron” targets interns and NEET aspirants to enlighten the scope and future of periodontics thereby guiding in choosing periodontics as their specialty.
