Overview
Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics is the branch of dentistry which deals with the treatment of caries, malformed, discolored, unesthetic, or fractured teeth and Endodontics deals with treatment of pulpal and periapical diseases and dental pain management. This department aims at preserving the natural tooth either by simple filling or by root canal therapy, which otherwise would have been extracted, thus making them functional for a life time.
Treatment modalities in Conservative Dentistry include restorative procedures for carious teeth and other defects of the teeth like fracture, attrition, erosion, abrasion etc. The branch also deals with esthetic dentistry wherein various esthetic treatments like Smile design, diastema closure, Veneers; Tooth whitening etc are rendered to the patients. The department improves the smile and appearance of the patients that help to enhance the confidence and self-esteem of the patients who are conscious about their oral health and appearance.
Endodontic treatment is rendered in teeth having pulpal diseases. Every attempt is made to save all the badly mutilated teeth, irrespective of the age of the patient bringing them back to normal function and esthetics.
Some cases require advanced treatment procedures like complicated Root canal treatment, Hemisection, Radisection, Apicectomy Splinting, Conservative bridges, Indirect esthetic restorations like porcelain/Composite inlays and onlays, Veneers, Endodontic surgery etc.
The provision of various treatment procedures begins with training the students on human simulators as pre-clinical training . The department has a huge phantom-head laboratory with simulators and complete assembly for appropriate training concerned with different treatment modalities.
The department has all advanced gadgets like Carl Ziess surgical operating microscope, Endosonics, Intra oral camera, advanced digital radiography like RVG , LED light curing units ,ADORO lab Composite ,Air abrasive polishing system, Plasma arc office bleaching equipment,Apex Locators, Endomotors, various thermoplasticized obturating systems like Thermafil, Obtura II , Elements etc . The department has well equipped isolated operatory for surgical endodontic procedures with carl ziess surgical operating microscope with microsurgical instruments and a well equipped ceramic and casting laboratory.
The most important aspect is that the department has enthusiastic, highly qualified, committed & dedicated staff. The expertise and clinical experience of staff is par excellence. The main concern of the department is service rendered to the patients. The department is always on a progressing front as far as quality of the treatment rendered to the patients is concerned.
The department has two equipped clinical sections; one for undergraduate students wherein basic treatment procedures are done and one for postgraduate students wherein all advanced treatments are given. The department encompasses a seminar hall with a department library which boasts of a good reference collection.
The Department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics was started in the year 2002. The Post graduate course was initiated in the year 2008 initially with an intake of 3 students per year and later in 2012 it was enhanced to 6 students per year. Recently the department is been recognized as a centre for PhD training.
Department has upgraded and transformed itself in to “Magnification Enhanced Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics Assisted By Ultrasonics ”. Each postgraduate doctor is provided with a dental operating microscope with ultrasonic equipment.
CAD-CAM
Digital impression, smile designing, restorative designing and fabrication of restorations is done with PM-7 milling machine (CAD-CAM)
Air abrasion facility is utilized for adhesion enhancements in aesthetic restorations.
Indirect composite restorations and veneers are fabricated with Multimat 2 Touch + Press pressable ceramic (Dentsply)
LASER enhanced –
1. Adhesion and photopolymerization of composite resins
2. Management of hypersensitivity
3. Vital pulp therapy
4. Disinfection during endodontic procedures
5. Gingival tissue management during restorations and impressions
6. Vital bleaching
Regenerative endodontics is practiced with PRF, PRP.
Navident – Dynamic navigation system
3D real time navigation technology is used for management of calcified canals, selective retreatodontics and apical surgery with minimal invasive protocol.
For the enhancement of knowledge and clinical skills of faculty and PGs, regular CDE programs and workshops are arranged in the department. In the last year 3 such programs were conducted.
