Overview
Public health dentistry is a specialized branch of dentistry. It is the science and art of preventing oral and dental diseases and promoting the oral and dental health as well as general health of people in the community. It serves the community as a patient rather than as an individual. The Department of Public Health Dentistry is concerned with the dental health education of the people in community, with applied dental research and the administration of group dental care programs as well as the prevention and control of dental diseases of school going children. The Public Health dentist have broad knowledge and skills in program administration, research methods, the prevention and control of diseases and providing dental care services for both school children and people in the community.
The department of public health dentistry also provides dental services to persons who do not have any access to general practitioners & hospitals like physically & mentally handicapped people & medically compromised patients. as a final point the Department of Public Health Dentistry co- ordinates & participate in the teaching of dental public health & Preventives, Practices to students , teachers, health, visitors, health educators, dieticians , nurses & doctors.
The Department of Public Health Dentistry was started in the year 2004 with an intake is 100 students per year for BDS course. The department trains undergraduate students for the fulfillment of the course in the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS).
The department spans over an area of 2,360 Sqf which includes HOD room; Professor room ; lecturers’ room; seminar room; department library with 48 reference books; sterilization room & receptionist area . A computer room with 24 hrs internet connection. U.G clinic area comprises 22 completely equipped dental chair units.
Department also includes other equipment like glass bead sterilizer; pulp tester; needle incinerator; LED curing units; refrigerator; surgical trolley; portable chair with all attachment and compressor. Department is privileged with a mobile dental unit (MDU) with 2 dental units and with all necessary equipments for treatment during camps.
